Want Stubborn Facial Hair Gone? Try Laser Hair Removal

Peach fuzz on the face, hair above the lip and hair between the eyebrows can really lower your self-confidence. It can be irritating to have to continually shave or tweeze the areas only to see hair show back up shortly after. The dermatologists at Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute can provide laser hair removal that will last longer than a shave and restore your self-confidence.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser treatments destroy hair by using a very strong light beam. When used on hair follicles, the light is so strong it destroys the hair. While it can help remove unwanted hair from the legs, chin, back, arms, underarms and bikini line, it is especially helpful in removing hair on the face.

Blonde hair, no matter where it is at on the body is much tougher to remove than dark and coarse hair. The lasers used are meant to target thicker, dark hair while removing many hairs all within one pulse. Since so many hairs can be removed at the same time, the procedure goes by fairly quickly depending on the size of the area. For example, both underarms can be treated in 5 to 10 minutes whereas the legs can take up to five times as long. Unfortunately, any area you select to have laser removal performed on will take more than one treatment to see complete results.

The average sessions per patient, per area is as little as three sessions and as many as seven sessions. Since so many treatments are necessary be sure to keep cost in mind when deciding to have laser hair removal. On average, one session is $285 but can vary based on which area you are having laser hair removal done on. Less treatments will be required when treating facial areas.

What to Expect During Laser Hair Removal

When it’s time for your laser hair removal appointment you can expect the treated hair to be barely visible. Before treatment, yourself and the doctor will put on protective eyewear. Next, the doctor will perform a patch test to ensure your skin does not have a bad reaction to the level of laser being used. Once your skin has been tested a numbing agent will be applied to help with any potential discomfort. During the treatment the pulses will feel like small stings that will be immediately soothed after treatment with the application of aloe or something similar.

After treatment you can schedule your next appointment no earlier than four weeks from originally being treated. This gives your skin time to heal and ensure it is ready for the next treatment. There is not much recovery time needed from the facial treatment though you may look like you have a sunburn for a few days afterward. Using cool compresses will help.

Preparing for laser hair removal is pretty simple but important to do. Avoid plucking or waxing of the area you plan to have treated and make sure to avoid any kind of sun exposure. Plucking and waxing before treatment can reduce the effects of laser hair removal since it has the same goal: to get to the root of the hair.

Laser hair removal is a great alternative to never having to shave, tweeze or pluck the hair on your face. After less than one year of treatments the facial hair being treated will no longer cause you any problems!
