Is It Harmful to Have Botox After the Age of 65?

Everyone’s heard of defying the look and feel of aging using Botox, but not many know what age to start Botox. The answer is different for everyone and is based on how they feel about their looks and what their aging process has looked like. Some begin Botox treatments in their younger years to get ahead of the aging process, and others begin once signs of aging have occurred. Common questions our dermatologists at the Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute receive in regard to Botox are about what age to start Botox and if it is safe to use after the age of 65. Our skilled dermatologists have all the answers to your questions to help determine if Botox is right for you.

What Is Botox?

As we age, our skin begins to lose elasticity, making it looser than normal. Once the skin is no longer as tight as usual, you may notice signs of crow’s feet around the eyes and facial wrinkles. Although this doesn’t bother some individuals, others find that it makes them self-conscious and choose to use Botox to help. Additionally, many use Botox as a preventative measure to avoid wrinkles and lines from ever appearing as they start to age.

Botox injections are FDA-approved and are typically performed by a dermatologist. They work underneath the surface to temporarily reduce muscle activity. This cuts down on moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and other lines. With Botox injections, your face will visibly look smoother. During a Botox treatment, the injections given will feel like a pinch. If you are getting Botox in your crow’s feet area, the dermatologist will inject three areas surrounding the crow’s feet on each eye. If you are getting Botox in the frown lines area, you can expect to have five injections in between your brows and forehead. Lastly, if you are getting Botox for forehead lines, there will be five injections into your forehead.

Minimal downtime is needed after a Botox treatment. Results will be noticed within 30 days and can last up to four months. Results are not permanent, and treatments need to be continued to keep seeing results.

Can You Use Botox After Age 65?

Botox is for men and women of all ages. Although “is Botox harmful?” is a common question, the answer is no! Even if you are older than 65, you can typically still safely receive Botox injections. Whether you choose to start before or after 65, everyone deserves a chance to look and feel their best, and Botox can be your solution. Knowing you have a safe and FDA-approved option is important, but always speak with your doctor first before receiving Botox, as side effects may occur.
