How to Use Botox for Wrinkle Prevention

As we age, it often begins to show in our face. It may appear in the form of undereye bags, crows’ feet, sagging skin or wrinkles. Thankfully with Botox, you can slow down the aging process by using it for wrinkle prevention. Below, the dermatologists at Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute teach you more about the benefits of Botox and how it can help prevent wrinkles.

What to Know Botox

The Aging Process

Signs of aging occur in both males and females and can begin as early as the mid-30s or as late as the 50s. It is a natural occurrence that is often caused from a lack of collagen being produced. It can also be caused by harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. Collagen is what keeps our skin tight and taut. It is naturally produced in our skin but is produced less as we age. When collagen is no longer being produced, it results in signs of aging such as loose skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. Other causes of aging can be from the sun, which results in age or sunspots and dry skin from a lack of moisture. Botox is often introduced as the best way to stop signs of aging from appearing while stimulating collagen production.

How Botox Works

The dermatologists at Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute use Botox with patients for a variety of reasons. Botox is great for:

  • Plumping lips
  • Giving volume to the cheek area
  • Tightening up sagging skin
  • Eliminating fine lines and wrinkles

In the case of wrinkle reduction and fine lines, Botox can be injected before wrinkles begin to appear or after they appear. When it is injected prior to lines or wrinkles appearing, it helps keep the skin’s elasticity in place and stimulate collagen production. When it is injected after lines and wrinkles have appeared, the Botox is injected directly into the affected areas. This helps to tighten the facial muscles and begin new collagen production. Botox causes muscles to stop moving and wrinkles to stop from forming.

It’s even a very safe treatment. During a treatment, the dermatologist will determine how many units of Botox you need based on the results you are looking for. They will then inject it into the areas of concern. It may be slightly painful, but some numbing cream may be applied before the treatment begins. The entire process shouldn’t take too long and there is minimal, if any, recovery time needed. Results appear in a few days and will last three to six months long. To prevent wrinkles or reduce their appearance, you will need to keep up with treatments. Botox treatments are typically priced per unit of Botox and range from $10-$25 per unit and it is common to use 40 to 60 units per treatment.
