How to Celebrate Healthy Skin This National Healthy Skin Month

National Healthy Skin month is a great reminder to celebrate your healthy skin by treating yourself to a facial as well as doing your annual skin cancer check. The dermatologists at Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute can perform various facials on you as well as help with your annual skin cancer check.

How to Treat Healthy Skin

Facial Treatments to Celebrate Healthy Skin

Treating yourself to a facial, such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and dermaplaning, are great ways to encourage healthy skin. Chemical peels help to remove the surface layers of the skin, revealing brighter and younger skin underneath. They also help to fade brown spots, improve lines and wrinkles, and even out skin tone from sun damage. When chemical peels are done every two months, it will increase collagen production. Collagen is naturally developed, but as we age, it is produced less and less. Collagen is what helps to keep the skin tight and firm.

Microdermabrasion is a popular non-surgical peeling therapy. It helps to remove fine lines and wrinkles, smooth out any pigmentation issues and improve acne. There is no downtime, and results include a youthful glow and improved skin texture and skin tone. During the facial, an applicator is used to sand away the outer layer of skin, which helps to rejuvenate it. Results are noticed immediately, but multiple treatments may be needed depending on your expectations.

Lastly, dermaplaning treatments are a great addition to either a chemical peel treatment or microdermabrasion treatment. The dermatologist uses a dermaplaning blade across the entire face to help rid the face of dead skin cells and any peach fuzz. It leaves the skin feeling smooth and looking bright, in addition to removing acne scarring and improving skin texture. While treating your skin to a facial is a great way to celebrate healthy skin, you also want to have it checked for skin cancer since it is often exposed to the sun.

Checking for Skin Cancer

Keeping our skin healthy by treating it to facials is important, but so is having it checked to ensure it is staying healthy. Our skin, especially the face, is often exposed to the sun. Wearing sunscreen daily, especially on the face, should be part of your skincare routine. Even when it is cloudy, the sun can cause sun damage. Even if you adamantly wear sunscreen, there is the possibility of having sun damage which can lead to skin cancer.

Having an annual skin cancer checkup with your dermatologist is great for peace of mind but also helps to catch any irregularities early on. A dermatologist will examine the skin for any changes in moles, and if any are found, they will determine if they are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), or melanoma. Depending on which type of skin cancer it is, the treatment will vary but can usually be performed by a dermatologist. Early detection and treatment are essential in protecting against skin cancer and the spread of skin cancer.
