Get Ready to Show Some Skin with Laser Hair Removal

Does unwanted body hair have you dreading the summer? We have a quick fix for that – laser hair removal. With laser hair removal, you can target specific body areas and remove unwanted hair. After you are hair-free you can finally feel comfortable enough to show off your skin this summer. The dermatologists at Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute can provide you with a consultation and perform the laser hair removal process. Below you will learn more about this laser treatment and what to expect.

Why Choose Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal can be done on both men and women. Patients choose to have laser treatment because they prefer to stop shaving, are self-conscious about having hair in a certain area, or simply because they want to be hairless. The most common areas treated by this medical procedure for men are between the eyebrows, on the chest and stomach area, or on the back. Women often opt to have it performed on the upper lip, arms, legs, bikini line or stomach areas. Once you choose the desired treatment location you will consult with a dermatologist.

How it Works and What it Costs

Before Treatment

At your consultation with the dermatologist they will explain the process and cost. Then, schedule to have you come back for your first session. At your first laser hair removal session, both you and the doctor will wear protective eyewear to protect from the laser. Next, they will test the laser on your skin to see if you have any kind of allergic reaction or skin irritation. If everything looks normal, they will begin working on the treatment area.

During Treatment

Pulses of highly concentrated light are emitted to the hair follicles. The larger the treatment area, the more pulses needed and the longer the session will take. Pulses become more intense at each session as it kills more of the hair follicle. The pulses will feel like a rubber band snapping or a quick bee sting. Fewer pulses will be needed for an area such as the chin versus both legs being treated. After the session, a gel such as aloe will be rubbed onto the hair removal area. It will have a cooling effect to help soothe any pain you may experience.

After Treatment

After treatment, be sure to avoid sweating for at least 24 hours. Additionally, you will need to avoid the sun for a few days. Results are almost immediate but will take several treatments to become permanent. The larger the treatment area, the more sessions that will be needed. Since multiple sessions will be needed to achieve complete results, you will want to take into consideration the cost of each session. The cost of each session varies based on the size of the treatment area, with the average cost being $285 per session.
